Hi Garrick ... I'm uncertain what you mean here. Do you mean how to see the "inside" of a person in terms of colour, texture and energy? If that's what you mean, I don't know how one would "see" that with a lens either.
Personally, I would take a basic portrait and then layer in the other expressive and creative elements by using Photoshop (employing what I term as "software enhancement"). So, in essence, the photographer would/might "build" their finished "new age portrait" they way we - as "The Open Sesames" - build a musical story (through adding layer upon layer of creative expression). In the case of the portrait it is visual expression and in our case it is audio expression.
